Rev. Carolyn Stephens

Senior Pastor

(she/her)

  • “I was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica. I am the last of seven children, with four older brothers and two sisters. I attended Montego Bay High School for Girls, and then Montego Bay Community College.

After college in Jamaica, I worked as a reservation supervisor with our national airline, Air Jamaica, for 6 years. I then came to the United States to further my studies. I completed my undergraduate degree at Georgia State University, and then attended Candler School of Theology at Emory University, where I earned a Master of Divinity degree.

After I graduated from Candler School of Theology, I was appointed to serve as a part-time local pastor at Tenth Street United Methodist Church. I served at Tenth Street for two years, during which time we merged with Underwood United Methodist Church and became Tenth Street Underwood United Methodist Church. After being commissioned by the Board Ordained Ministry, I was appointed as associate pastor at Cannon United Methodist Church in Snellville. During my tenure at Cannon, I oversaw adult education, spiritual formation, and mission and outreach.

At the end of my three years at Cannon, I was ordained and appointed to serve as senior pastor at Brookhaven United Methodist Church. While at Brookhaven, I guided the church into a new direction, encouraging and challenging them to go outside the wall of the church into the community and to be a good neighbor. The church grew, with a 40 percent increase in average weekly attendance.

One of the primary guiding principles for how I live is Christ’s teaching on love of God and love of neighbor. I am zealous for, and fully committed to the work of the Kingdom. I love serving the church. I am passionate about preaching the Word of God, teaching, and ordering the life of the church, so its members can reach the full potential of who they are in God, and be vessels of God’s love, grace, and goodness in the world. I am also deeply passionate about helping persons know God’s love for them.

I am married to Anthony Drummer, and have two stepsons, Christian and Donovan, who are high-school seniors. I have more than 20 nieces and nephews, who are all over the world and very dear to my heart. I am an avid walker, walking up to 7 to 9 miles whenever I can. I love to go to parks and be in the outdoors to see the beauty and wonder of God’s creation. I am looking forward to visiting some of our national parks over the next few years. I love to travel, especially to other countries to see the cultures and the peoples and bear witness, again and again, to the truth that at the end of the day we are all humans, image-bearers of the Most High God. The beach, particularly the Caribbean Sea, brings me great joy. I love all things Star Trek, in all the ways and forms it is and has evolved over the years, and I love to cook and read.”
